This walking tour around Åhus offers a medieval town centre, pine-scented beaches and beautiful views.
A good starting point for this stage is the harbor in Åhus, where you can either go east via Täppet or west via Sånnarna. Both routes take you back to Åhus and there are good parking facilities in the harbour.
The charming town of Åhus welcomes visitors with its long, beautiful beaches and well-preserved medieval town centre. The city's history stretches all the way back to the late Iron Age/Viking Age. Near the harbor at the Aosehus visitor site, there is a castle ruin dating from the 12th century. The castle was used to collect tolls from those who traveled along the river. The Helgeån outlet in the Hanö Bay has for many years been a natural hub for the exchange of goods. As early as the middle of the 8th century, there was a market and craft market a couple of kilometers upstream of the current Åhus.
If you follow the trail east, you will soon reach the beach known as Ålakusten, home to the characteristic ål huts. The Ål huts are a living cultural monument designated as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO and included on the Swedish cultural heritage list. Take the opportunity to take a dip in the sea before continuing your journey north.
Just north of Åhus, the landscape changes to pine forest, which is characteristic of the coastal areas. One of Skåneleden's nature playgrounds is passed before you turn south through the sandy field landscape.
The journey continues to Sånnarna nature reserve. Sännarna is the local word for the sands. These dry and sandy lands have been cultivated with shifting cultivation right into the 1950s. In the past, the lands were considered rough, but today we understand how to appreciate the area's high natural values, peculiar plants and rare insects.
Sännarna is today one of the places to visit in the Vattenriket biosphere area and is a sanctuary for a number of sand-dwelling plants and animals. In the frog water in the north, you can also get to know the rare beach toad.
The trail continues towards Åhus, where you soon pass the square located in the old part of town. Enjoy the idyllic settlement with historic charm and if it's summer, an ice cream at the well-known ice cream kiosk is recommended. Freshly baked waffles and ice cream made for generations.
There are several bus stops near this stage.
