On the trail section between Ystad and Mossbystrand, you’ll hike along the southern coast’s beaches, fishing villages, unique natural landscapes, and grand estates.
With over 300 picturesque half-timbered houses, Ystad is one of Sweden’s most charming small towns. This gem in Österlen features cozy cobblestone streets lined with unique, authentic half-timbered buildings.
The trail passes Ystad’s New Cemetery, a tranquil green oasis built in the early 1800s, located just outside the city center. Continuing the walk, you’ll reach Gjuteriet, where a foundry operated for over 100 years, producing steam engines, dairy and agricultural machinery, stoves, and cast iron goods. Today, it’s a residential area.
In Ystad, you’ll find a wide range of restaurants, cafés, and hotels.
The hike then leads to the fishing village of Svarte, a natural settlement since the 1800s, located where the river flows into the sea. Here, you’ll also find Disas Ting, an ancient rectangular formation of sixteen standing stones, with the tallest stones reaching over two meters.
The coastline west of Ystad hosts a rich flora, including bloody crane's-bill, spiked speedwell, Deptford pink, and slender trefoil. At Klintholmen and Lilleskog, sand lizards inhabit the seaside cliffs alongside wild thyme, meadow thistles, the silver-studded blue butterfly, and purple bar moth. You’ll also pass the Osmarken campsite, which offers a magnificent sea view.
Grand estates define parts of the countryside, with beautiful tree-lined avenues, such as those at Högasten and Charlottenlund Castle, built in 1849 in a medieval romantic style.
Along this trail section, both bus stops and train stations can be found in Svarte and Ystad
